Thomas Brodie-Sangster explains his First Order cameo in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
Sharp-eyed viewers noticed that star cameo in Star Wars: The Force Awakens — the First Order officer barking out, “We have an unsanctioned departure in Bay 2.”
Petty Officer Thanisson is Thomas Brodie-Sangster, the adorable kid Sam from Love Actually, Jojen Reed in Game of Thrones and Newt in the Maze Runner franchise. Thanisson’s effort to keep heroes Poe and Finn from escaping via TIE Fighter shows the actor went to the Star Wars dark side.
“I keep saying that I’ve always wanted to play a baddie. And that counts,” says Brodie-Sangster, now 27 and appearing in the third Maze Runner: The Death Cure (now in theaters)
Brodie-Sangster says he received a call late at night about the Force Awakens part from his management. The life-long Star Wars fan jumped at the opportunity.
“They said, ‘It’s a bit odd. There’s a part in Star Wars, it films next week, we don’t really know much about it. But it might be a baddie and we think there’s a line. Do you want to do it?’ ” Brodie-Sangster recalls. “And I was like, ‘Um, Yeah! It’s Star Wars!’ It’s a big childhood thing to tick off the list. Just immediately yes. Of course.”
The amazing First Order flagship set under director J.J. Abrams and the First Order black outfit — fitted and tailored to his exact specifications — made it even better than he expected.
“The level they go through is just ridiculous. It felt very sinister, walking onto that clean sterile environment felt like a star destroyer,” says Brodie-Sangster. “It was very special.”
While the actor jokes that Thanisson even has a backstory (“it’s very complicated”) the officer didn’t get a call for a repeat appearance in The Last Jedi.
“I’d love to go back. But no call back,” says Brodie-Sangster.
